Perth Solar Cities
In May 2010 Midland Atelier became part of the Solar Cities program, an Australian Government initiative. Perth Solar Cities consortium partner SunPower installed 201 solar panels onto the roofs of Midland Atelier’s Pattern Shop and Foundry buildings, along with power inverters, an LCD monitor and a data acquisition system for remote monitoring by SunPower.
The solar panels generate 60 kilowatts of solar power - equivalent to the power needs of more than 15 homes. The panels power the lights and equipment of Midland Atelier while adding energy to the Perth power grid. The solar panels will contribute to the reduction of 94 tonnes of CO2 entering the atmosphere per year, over 25 years.
The Perth Solar Cities program has seen five iconic solar systems installed throughout Perth including Midland Atelier, Perth Zoo, Perth Arena, Central Institute of Technology and Kings Park. The eastern Perth community is also involved through a community partnership with the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council.
The Midland Atelier solar installation is a $500,000 project jointly funded by the State Government ($300,000) and the Australian Government’s Solar Cities program ($200,000). It is managed by the Midland Redevelopment Authority.
