In February 2008 Wesfarmers and architectural consultants Woods Bagot engaged FORM to establish the commission of two furniture pieces to form part of their new reception space. The furniture has been designed and manufactured at Midland Atelier by leading designers Malcolm Harris, an award winning maker and designer specialising in custom made furniture, and Jon Goulder, one of Australia’s foremost furniture designers whose work has featured in a number of major exhibitions and publications around the world. Wesfarmers has enjoyed a long-standing partnership with FORM to support the work of locally-based artists and designers and this initiative marks the first design commission undertaken for inclusion in the Wesfarmers Collection of Australian Art.
Installed in September 2008, the reception desk and bench seat have been produced exclusively for Wesfarmers and encompass different production techniques and approaches as a means of highlighting design excellence. Both pieces reference Wesfarmers’ sustained growth over time, through the layers and gradation of colour and texture in the sustainable hand-carved Australian Oak. Integral to this project was Bob Hill, who sadly passed away in August 2008 before seeing the furniture installed.
Under the umbrella of the award-winning Wesfarmers Arts Programme, Wesfarmers supports the work of many leading West Australian and national performing and visual arts companies, and maintains a museum-quality collection of Australian art from colonial to contemporary times.
